Reykjavik Despite its airs of a small town, Reykjavik alone is home to two thirds of the country's population, namely around 118,000 inhabitants. © Thomas Kakalik - age fotostock
Close to 170 000 inhabitants, the Icelandic capital shelters more than half the population. Its name, meaning "Bay of Smoke", originates from the vapour produced by the surrounding sources of hot water. An energy source which today provides heating to the town while respecting the environment. With its unique air quality, Reykjavik is undeniably the least-polluted capital in the world: as a proof, you have one of the best salmon rivers in the country flowing through the city. A human-shaped setting where picturesque and tradition blend with high-tech: Reykjavik deserves a visit. Food, art galeries, theatres, concerts and operas: the city has it all. Even late night fans will enjoy multiple ooportunities to hang out til dawn.
