Bombay, India A panoramic view of the city. © Bruno Perousse
Bombay is a city of wanderers. In the town centre, you can stay for ages on the open green areas. Further southwards, wander behind the Taj hotel on Colaba Causeway or Shahid Bhagat Singh Mg, a charming street with cafés, restaurants and boutiques. On this street, you should choose the morning to listen to the shouting in the Sassoon Dock market. Take a stroll on Marine Drive (Netaji Subhashchandra Bose Rd) also known to the inhabitants as the "Queen's Necklace". Move along from Nariman Point up to Chowpatty Beach that, in the evening, transforms into a mixture of carnaval and fairground, graced by masseurs, contortionists, snake charmers and magicians. On Back Bay, you can contemplate the panorama on the Malabar Hill bay, the swanky neighbourhood of the city. Also take a stroll in front of the 18th Century colonial pavillions and the luxury buildings of the nouveau riche. Visit the Hanging Gardens; small gardens lying on the flanks of a hill, and the Nehru Kamara garden.
