Northermost state of India, Jammu and Kashmir is crossed by the Himmalayan range. Surrounded by China, Afghanistan and Pakistan, this mountainous region is reputed for the beauty of its landscape. Nature lovers will enjoy it, especially in the south where Jammu plain is separated from the Kashmir valley by the Pir Panjal massif and in the northeast where the Ladakh plateau is situated. The situation of this territory tugging on all sides and its decolonisation have made it a territory where the population is very diverse. Political troubles that have been going on since 1980 create a tense atmosphere, unadvised to tourists.

At the moment, visiting Kashmir is strongly unadvised due to the conflicts that are still going on between Pakistan and and India. In the Kashmir valley, neither of the two countries acknowledges the international borders. Even though the Indian government has not set any restrictions to visit the region for the moment, inform yourself beforehand on the development of the political situation, in order to avoid any inconvenience once you're there. Risks of kidnapping should be taken seriously. Opt for a visit to Jammu, trecks in the heart of the high mountain pass region and in the valleys of Ladakh, which offers many possibilities, and at the same time avoiding any border with China.
