India, the towns and cities in pictures - New Delhi

  • New Delhi

Capital of India and third biggest megalopolis of the country, New Delhi is located to the north, in the Delhi Union Territory. Stretching to infinity, the city currently has around 11 million inhabitants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Prepare to hear a jumble of languages all mixed into one, including Hindi, Punjabi and English. To make things easier when deciding where to stay, remember that most places of interest are on the west bank of the river Yamuna. This should come in handy when trying to navigate through a city heaving under the weight of so much traffic. It may be busy, cramped and sweaty, but it's also a city full of beautiful monuments, intriguing history and insanely good food. Not only that, the performing arts scene is quickly beginning to flourish here, with concerts, gigs and all manner of events going on every day of the year. A city of two sides, head to New Delhi for the swankier side of life. Stylish cafes and bars flank the streets and India's well-to-do frequent the pavements and shops. Old Delhi will plunge you into a riot of chaos, colour and sound - the food here is truly sublime but you may want to avoid the dodgier looking street vendors, there really is nothing worse than going home with 'Delhi Belly'! The great thing about Delhi's numerous attractions is that they are mostly free. Though camera charges may apply in some, you will rarely have to pay an entrance fee and all can be easily reached using the city's public transport.

Destination overview

FCO travel update: the FCO advises against all travel in the immediate vicinity of the border with Pakistan, other than at Wagah, as well as all travel in Manipur. There is also a travel restriction on Jammu and Kashmir with the exception of the cities of Jammu and Srinagar, travel between these two cities on the Jammu-Srinagar highway, and the region of Ladakh. The FCO also advises against all travel to Imphal.

Delhi, Mumbai, previously Bombay, Calcutta, Chennai (Madras), Pondicherry and Varanasi (Benares) rank amongst the largest cities in India. Just like India itself, they are full of contrasts. While the cities of the Rajasthan attract visitors to the world of fantasy of the Arabian Nights with their splendid palaces and temples, other cities like Calcutta or Bombay are blighted by such an abject poverty that can put off some visitors. In this gigantic land, each town has its own living standard, culture, traditions and customs and even its own language. Consequently, instead of only discovering a city, you discover a whole new culture.

pros

  •  India is a mosaic of clutures and enjoys a rather unusual secular history.
  •  From north to south and from east to west, you can appreciate its numerous Hindu, Jain and Sikh temples, its mosques, churches and other rich and majestic monuments.

cons

  •  The violent culture shock tourist have difficulties coping with.
  •  Political tensions limit trips to certain regions.
  •  Trips to discover the Laquedives, Andaman and Nicobar islands require special regulated permits for foreigners.
  •  The monsoon seasons between June and August are to be avoided due to difficulties in travelling.

Our Editorial team's advice

In Kerala, you can sail on the "backwaters", a network of canals along the sea that penetrate deep into the country. You should at least offer yourself a night in one of the magnificient palaces of the Maharajas transformed into luxury hotels in the Rajasthan. Watch out for tigers, elephants and other migratory birds during a safari-photo tour to the numerous natural reserves in the country. You can equally take an excursion in the western ghats of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In Mumbai you will return to the world of glitz and glamour of the Hollywood film studios. And at Varanasi you can watch the pujas on the ghats in the sacred waters of the Ganges.
