In Kochi, make several stopovers to the islands and peninsulas. The Portuguese houses of the first settlers border the narrow streets. Head towards Jewtown Road with its antique dealers and you will come across the16th century synagogue. Inside, admire the sculpted wood arch and its Torah rolls which are set with gold, silver and precious stones. Near the port landing stage on the South peninsula, Fort-Cochin or Mattancherry Palace demonstrates Portuguese and Dutch influences and it is decorated with stunning wall paintings which retrace some legendary scenes. Inside the palace, visit the Bhagavati temple - a sanctuary dedicated to Vishnou and Shiva - and St. Francois Church, the oldest Indian church where air is circulated by huge fans. Then, notice the colour of the interior of Santa-Cruz Portuguese Cathedral. Finally, walk up to the end of Fort-Cochin to view the lovely set of Chinese square fishing nets.
