Ornithological reserves

9 miles west of Kottayam, in the Western Ghats, the Kumarakom Ornithological Reserve with the Vembanad Lake covers the land with a former rubber plantation which is full of migratory birds. Thattekad Reserve, in the centre and the east of the Kerala region, also hosts sedentary and migratory birds, in the heart of teak and bamboo forests. The best season to observe herons, budgerigars and other Malabar Grey Hornbill is from October to March.
