Varanasi is renowned for its silk and specialises in silk goods embroided with golden thread and brocades. In the old town, you can spend ages in the narrow alleys of the Pilikothi Muslim neighbourhood north west of the central post office. Here, you can buy brocades and watch them manufactured from start to finish. It is ideal to travel to one of the surrounding villages like Sarnath, to watch real silk work. Whatever the case, seek advice from a connaisseur, beware of crooks (mixture of textiles) and bargain the prices.
Take the busy Kalachuri Gali street, lined with shops and stalls selling religious objects. Elsewhere, buy wooden objects, musical instruments and spices. At the Cottage Industries Exposition held in the Cantonment neighbourhood to west of the city, find local handicraft at fixed prices, including expensive carpets known as bhadohis.
