The Amber Fortress, Rajasthan, India Financed by Raja Man Singh in the 16th century, the fortress is one of the most representative examples of Rajput architecture. Martin Siepmann/ age fotostock
To get to the Rajput fortress of Amber, about six miles north of Jaipur, you cross the Maota Segar lake invaded by water hyacinth and the Jal Mahal, an 18th century palace closed to the public. The fortified end-of-16th century palace is on the hillside and juts out over a lake. You get in on foot or on elephant back, a very expensive tourist-catcher.
