Take a stroll at Maidan, a green area surrounding Fort William on the banks of the Hooghly. The Eden Gardens stretch out along the north-western angle of Maidan and house a Burmese PAgoda in the centre of a lake. You can also find cricket and football pitches, tennis courts and musical pools and fountains. Watch international competitions at the Calcutta Cricket Ground in the Ranji stadium. From the Ghats, go for a cruise on the Hooghly on the ferries from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and travel to the west bank to discover the extensive botanic gardens and the often crowded Howrah bridge. Walk around the 400 m circumference of a 200 year old tree (Banian) and visit a greenhouse palm grove. Take a stroll on the bustling Chowringhee road. Further south of the Maidan, the peaceful horticulture gardens are home to white tigers and reptiles of the Alipore Zoo.
