The road of the palaces, India Rajasthan

The India of the One Thousand and One Arabian nights comes alive on the road of the palaces in the heart of Rajasthan. Pushkar, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer are only a few cities that you will discover during your tour. Each one of them has retained an incredible wealth of architecture, including palaces, havelis (private residences) and fortresses that stand as silent witnesses to this region's history. Leading tourists to the Pakistan border in the middle of the desert, the former "rajputes" land is dotted with the old palaces of the Maharajahs that nowadays serve as hotels. For an affordable price, you can sleep surrounded by gilt, old paintings and old-time furniture, indulging in the lifestyle of princes of a bygone era during a timeless stay.

Visit The road of the palaces

  • To see

The Thar Desert at the gates of Jaisalmer, the City Palace of Jaipur, the fortress of Amber, the Jain Temples in Mount Abu, the Majestic Fort in Jodhpur, the Lake Pichola in Udaipur, the santuary of the saint Muin-ud-Din Chishti in Ajmer, the small bustling streets of Pushkar, Adinath temple in Ranakpur...

    To do

Visit the palaces that you encounter on your way. A camel ride in the desert is a fun experience although quite popular among tourists. Stroll through the streets of Bikaner and discover the many havelis that have been turned into hotels or simply abandoned.

    To think about

Remember to take some money while you are in a big city and to have some change with you, because shopkeepers scarcely have any.
  • To avoid

In Pushkar and in Udaipur, in order to access the edge of the lake, you will be asked to say a prayer and then... to make a donation. Do not give in to pressure and do not give more than one or two rupees. Do not shake hands with boys, this is a western tradition. Here, you only nod your head down to greet a person. Avoid going out too scantily dressed (especially women).

    To try

All Indian dishes are worth a try and the advantage of Rajasthan is that its cuisine is less spicy than that of the south. Try the spinach with cheese, rice mixed with chicken and onions, and the rest of dishes made of meat, all very tasty. Avoid eating raw vegetables and drinking water that is not bottled.

    To bring back

In Pushkar, many shops sell clothes of cotton or silk that you can add to your wardrobe for a lower cost. There are also many T-shirts, trousers and skirts for sale, mainly in the "hippie" style. In Jaisalmer, you will find puppets made of wood and various colourful fabrics, which can serve as original gifts. Moreover, many shops sell leather bags of all sizes, at very interesting prices.

    Pushkar camel fair, India

An astonishing 50,000 camels converge on the tiny desert town of Pushkar, in India's state of Rajasthan, for the annual Pushkar Fair. It's a fascinating and peculiar sight, and a great opportunity to witness an old traditional style Indian festival. The original intention behind the Pushkar Camel Fair was to attract local camel and cattle traders to do business during the holy Kartik Purnima festival,
