In brief
The Balinese are tolerant in principle towards Westerners and their ways, but remember that this does not mean that they are any less concerned with traditionalism. So do not clash with local sentiments, particularly with regard to a conservative attitude to clothing: growing up in a tropical environment is not an excuse for going around half-naked. Also, respect religious practices, and take your shoes off in the temples and mosques. Generally avoid touching or indicating anything with your left hand, which is used... for the toilet. Never indicate anything with your finger, use your hand, making a broad gesture. In the case of disagreement in a conversation or negotiation, do not raise your voice or openly show anger, and try not to make your interlocutor "lose face". Similarly, do not address anyone with your hands on your hips, which is an attitude considered as disrespectful or aggressive. As elsewhere in Asia, do not touch childrens' heads. Bargaining is a general principle in commercial relationships, including shopping.
