Overview

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Between the Moluccas and Borneo, in the heart of Indonesia, lies Sulawesi Island, formerly known as "Celebes". Its uncontestable tourist attractions remain unrecognised. From the superb but remote beaches along the coast to the mountainous areas past the terraced paddy fields, this equatorial island offers a wide variety of landscapes populated by rich and unique fauna. Land of the Torajas, it occasionally becomes the setting for fascinating funeral ceremonies that arouse the curiosity of the Westerner.

pros

  •  It offers the surprises and untouched originality of a "new" destination, when one leaves the main tourist attraction of the island, the land of the Torajas.
  •  North Sulawesi blends the discovery of new people and the delights of the seaside.

cons

  •  The distance of Sulawesi makes it a relatively costly destination.
  •  The inadequately developed means of communication make travelling around often slow and difficult outside the main inhabited centres.

Country Guide

Our Editorial team's advice

As the funeral rites and ceremonies of the Torajas are a fast-rising tourist attraction, avoid travelling in peak periods of summer, and preferably visit the Toraja country immediately after the rainy season (that normally ends around March).
Although Sulawesi lies in the heart of the equatorial zone, temperatures may drop sharply (up to 5 °C, at night) in the high altitude areas of the mainland. Do not forget to put some woolen socks in your luggage.
With very few visitors, Central Sulawesi is an absolute delight for lovers of excursions. This is where you will find the amazing megaliths of Bada Valley, dating back to the Bronze Age, but whose exact origin remains a mystery.
In North Sulawesi, close to Manado, underwater diving enthusiasts should not miss out on the underwater site of Pulau Bunaken, whose coral valleys are amongst the most renowned on the planet.
