Wildlife

Wildlife The plantations, Sulawesi, Indonesia The island is full of precious trees like the sandalwood, ebony and the camphor, as well as clove and nutmeg-producing plants. P.de Franqueville

One of the distinctive features of Sulawesi is that it lies at the confluence of two major and largely different geo-climatic belts, separated by the famous Wallace Line (named after the English naturalist who studied them): the one in the west clearly fits into the Asian setting, while the other, to the east, is markedly similar to Australia. The result : a very peculiar environment, marked by a specific fauna, and some species only exist here. Therefore, over half of the local mammals (today around 100 in total) are endemic to the island, such as the dwarf buffalo, the pig-deer, the "tarsier" and several species of birds and fruit-eating bats.
