In the north of Iran, the Alborz Mountains form a narrow barrier between the country's central plateaus and the coasts of the Caspian Sea. Summits peak at more than 13,120 ft, so use a car to cross! From the arid southern flanks with their junipers, you move into terraced rice-fields and tea plantations, from which you find yourself on the northern flanks that drop into the sea.
