On 26 December 2003, the citadel of Bam collapsed, knocked down by a terrible earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale. More than 2,000 years old, this architectural wonder was one of the most impressive dry earth edifices in the world. The city is currently being rebuilt.
