Airports
The Tehran airport is in the southern part of the city. Take a taxi and not a bus if you do not read Persian. The fare to the town centre is about £12.

Security
It is recommended to avoid crowds or driving late at night. If you plan to visit Kerman, do so via a travel agency. If you are travelling alone, signal your presence at the embassy and it is preferable to always carry a copy of your passport. In Tehran, move around with the copy and keep the original in a safe place, in the safety deposit box of your hotel for example. Currently, you are advised to avoid going to the regions bordering Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends to specifically avoid roads linking the town of Bam to the town of Zahedan.

Languages
The official language is Persian. Azerbaijani, Kurdish and ten other languages and dialects are spoken in different parts of the country. English is not widespread; it is spoken in hotels and on some major touristic sites.

Requirements
You must show a passport valid for six months, starting from the date your visa was issued. You must request a visa at least 4 months in advance due to the delay. You must show a return plane ticket in order to fill in a form, as well as an ID photo.
Know that it is forbidden to import alcohol.

Religion
Shi'ite Islam represents 91% and Sunnite Islam 8%. Christians, Jews and disciples of Zoroaster are a minority.

Currency
The currency is the Iranian Rial (IRR). £1 Sterling = approximately 14,845 IRR. Money can be exchanged in banks, which also have counters at airports and in most large hotels. These are open from 9:00am to 4:00pm or even 4:30pm, from Saturday to Wednesday. Remember to take cash with you, particularly when travelling outside of the cities. Dollars are also worth bringing because many hotels prefer them. With regards to credit cards, only MasterCard is accepted in larger establishments. As far as travellers cheques are concerned, American Express cheques are easier to exchange than others.

Local transportation
Air transport is the most appropriate owing to the country's surface area. Regular air shuttles link the big cities at affordable prices. You can also take the train. It is fast, but does not serve the whole country. However, the bus goes round the country at affordable cost. In the city, it is preferable to take the taxi you could also hire for your excursions. Avoid the bus if you do not read Persian!

Health
No particular vaccine is required, but vaccinations against tetanus, poliomyelitis and diphtheria are recommended. Consider taking an anti-malaria treatment if you are travelling in the southeast from March to November, and in the west and southwest during summer.
In general, tap water is drinkable, but you can also buy mineral water in the big cities.

Electricity
Voltage of 220 V.
