Wildlife, Iran The country's wildlife includes a few rare specimens of tigers and lions, but also many leopards, wolves and wild boar, as well as a multitude of species of lynx, fox and gazelle. Bas Van T Slot / age fotostock;
Up to the middle of the last century, Iranian wildlife was very diverse. The country was mainly home to lions, tigers, panthers and cheetahs. Today, most of these have disappeared. However, the country still boasts several wildlife species, notably wolves, jackals, leopards, hyenas, wild boars, red deers, wild donkeys...., a rich variety thanks to the geographical and climatic diversity of the country.
As for birdlife, Iran is not left behind as the rest of the Persian Gulf hosts large swarms of migratory birds yearly. Over 500 winged species are reported to have been identified in the country.
Finally, the Caspian sea is rich in the prized sturgeon, in high demand for the caviar it produces.
