Eilat, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories

Located on the banks of the Red Sea in the extreme south of the country, Eilat is one of the most popular seaside resorts in Israel. Surrounded on both sides by the crimson mountains of the desert, in a breathtaking view, the city has rapidly grown within a few decades without any real architectural cohesion. The airport, located in the city centre, testifies to this somewhat anarchic urbanisation. Nevertheless, Eilat has many tourist attractions.
To begin with, there is the Red Sea and its rich sea beds, which make it a destination of choice for diving enthusiasts and those who like beach resorts. Then there is the desert, which stretches from the gates of the city and offers a guaranteed change of scenery for the few adventurers who are willing to explore the area by jeep, on camel back or by foot. Eilat is also a very lively city, frequented by young people seeking entertainment and festivities and its trendy bars and chic nightclubs have nothing to envy of the big international cities.
As for hotels, the seaside town also offers a diverse choice which includes the palaces of the seaside holiday clubs and their 'all inclusive' services and rental apartments, etc. The choice is indeed broad enough to satisfy all demands. As for the lack of charm of these sometimes imposing buildings, this is largely compensated for by the fact that the hotels are well-equipped, particularly for families, with a very good level of comfort.
Finally, Eilat has the advantage of being able to welcome holidaymakers all year round, as the destination is known to have an exceptional amount of sunshine with only four days of rain per year!

pros

  •  The hotels are comfortable and well equipped
  •  The young and festive atmosphere
  •  The multitude of sports and leisure activities

cons

  •  The noisy and rocky beaches
  •  The airport in the city centre
  •  The city's lack of charm

Visit Eilat

  • To see

The underwater observatory of ?Coral world' and the Dolphin Reef are two of the many attractions of Eilat. A total of 25 aquariums and dolphin shows are great for young and old alike. As for excursions, you can treat yourself to a small trip in a 4x4 or a camel back ride, preferably at sunset, to the canyons surrounding the Timna valley in the Negev desert.

    To do

Eilat is the seaside resort of the country, and it is here that you can practise all different types of water sports. Diving in the Red Sea and on the barrier reef is a real delight. Trips out to sea on board a sailing boat, a motor boat or even a glass bottom boat and mini-cruises to Coral Island off the coast of Egypt are also available from the marina.

    To think about

Above all, remember to take your sunscreen, snorkels and flippers with you.
  • To avoid

Avoid visiting religious places scantily dressed.

    To try

In Eilat, you will find many small restaurants serving fish and seafood specialities, but you will also be able to sample truly oriental cuisine, like falafel, houmous etc.

    To bring back

Your basket of souvenirs will probably be a bit full by now, but you can always bring back objects made from olive wood or pearls, and you can even bring back wicker baskets as some villages make the baskets. If you're looking for religious objects as souvenirs, you can buy kippas and mezouzas, and of course you will be able to find jewellery pieces decorated with the lucky eye which can make a nice souvenir. As for the cuisine, the smell of spices will titillate your sense of smell and you'll want to bring some spices back with you!
