Over four hundred species of birds have been discovered in Israel. In spring and autumn, the country is an obligatory gateway for millions of migratory birds. Among them are several wading birds (river lapwings, redshanks, sandpipers, white and black storks) and also birds of prey (eagles, sparrow hawks, black kites, and different types of buzzards). Eilat is one of the best observation sites in the country; it has a bird banding station and the International Bird watching Centre organises ornithological trips. On the Mediterranean coast, a few miles north of Caesarea, coastal ponds are the meeting points for flamingoes, egrets, pelicans and storks. Mount Meron and Golan Heights and swamps are also excellent stations. There you have cormorants, herons and ducks from the Hula Reserve (the largest swamp in Israel). The Negev Desert is the muster point for falcons and sparrow hawks, whereas the royal eagles prefer the peaks of Galilee.
