The Jericho Oasis, Israel Close to the oasis is the archaeological site of Jericho, with its famous wall from the 3rd century BC. Ralph Braumer / age fotostock;
It was here 13 miles to the south of Jericho that in 1947, a young Bedouin discovered a set of jars containing rolls of manuscripts in a cave. These famous 'Dead Sea Scrools' - several tens of thousands of them - belonged to the Jewish sect known as the Essenians, a monastic community who around 150 BC withdrew into the desert to study the Sacred Texts. These precious manuscripts contained the rules of the community and the oldest biblical texts written in archaic Hebrew. The site displays the study room where members of the sect spent time reading and writing copies of the texts.
