Located 13 miles east of Tel-Aviv, Ramla is the first city to be founded on sand by the Muslim conquerors of the 7th century. It was conquered by the Crusaders, taken over by Richard the Lionhearted who established his headquarters there and visited by Bonaparte. Today, it is shared by the Jews and Arabs who live together peacefully. Places to visit here are numerous: there is the ancient Roman Cathedral of the Crusaders, which was transformed into a mosque in 1268; there is also the souk located close to the Grand Mosque and the White Tower, (a 13th century minaret belonging to a mosque in ruins) which has become the emblem of the city. Also, do not miss a visit to the Cisterns of Saint Helen, where you can take a boat ride on immense underground reservoirs which date back to the year 789.
