It is in this fortress built in the 18th century by the Ottoman governor Ahmed el-Jazzar that the British, during the Second World War, imprisoned nationalist resistance fighters and Haganah Jewish soldiers. This ancient central prison of Palestine is today a museum in memory of those who were detained; some of whom executed.
