The Haļ Bar reserve

The Haļ Bar reserve The Haļ Bar Reserve, Israel This reserve is located in the Araba Valley and is a result of a project to reintroduce certain animal species mentioned in the Bible into nature. © Christian Vaisse/Hoa Qui

The Haļ Bar Nature Reserve (23 miles north of Eilat) in the Araba Valley is the main centre of the project for the reintroduction of animal species mentioned in the Bible. These animals lived in Israel 2 or 3 thousand years ago; there is the Asian wild donkey ("the onager" mentioned in the Book of Job), the Somalian wild donkey, the ostrich (it totally disappeared in the 60s!), the dorcas gazelle, the Cuvier gazelle, the Arabian white oryx (the unicorn in the Bible) and the Saharan and Negev carnivores (leopard, lynx, sand cat, African wildcat, fennec, scrawny fox, striped hyena, jackals, etc), reptiles and birds of prey. This is a site that you must stop to see.
