The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem The Edicule of the Holy Sepulchre that holds the tomb of Jesus Christ represents the most sacred holy site of Christendom. © René Mattes
On the Crucifixion site, Emperor Constantine the Great raised a vast sanctuary to house the tomb of Christ. Destroyed in 1009 by the Fatimide Kaliph, Hakim, it was rebuilt in 1042 by the Byzantine Emperor, Constantine Monomac, who only maintained the rotunda protecting the tomb. The Crusaders added a basilica and several chapels to it and today, the sancutary is shared by six Christian churches. In the Holy Sepulchre you will find Golgotha (?place of the skull', the skull of Adam who is reported to have been buried there), where Christ was tortured, the hole of the rock where the Cross was buried, the Stone of the Anointing, where the body was kept, the tomb of Christ and finally, the crypt of Saint Helen where she found the True Cross.
