Agrigento e Licata, Sicily

Sicily's southern coast has not yet experienced the same tourist development as its northern coast. It has managed, thus far, to avoid an invasion of huge hotel complexes and hotels which could ruin the beauty of the shoreline. In fact, some parts of the coast are protected and it is prohibited to destroy the flora and the fauna that live there. Indeed, the beaches are often subject to many limitations, allowing them to conserve an authentic and wild aspect. This small area of southern Italy has suffered conquests by the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantine and the Spanish. It is a place really worth seeing, even if just to visit the Valley of the Temples: of major historical and archaeological interest, it possesses incredible beauty which reveals all of its charm in the light of the setting sun.

Visit Agrigento e Licata

  • To see

Above all, do not miss out on visiting the Valley of the Temples, which is slightly set back from the centre of Agrigento. When travelling along the road leading to it, at the bottom of the hill dominating the vast surrounding countryside, you can already see some of the temples which are absolutely magnificent at sunset. In the city centre, if you climb the narrow streets leading up the mountainside, stop at the church of Santa Maria dei Greci and at the Santo Spirito Monastery. In Licata, from the heights of the Sant' Angelo Castle (a former Spanish fort), you will be able to enjoy a view over the sea.

    To do

The best activity, though, is relaxing on the beach, especially during the hot summers Sicilians know all too well. The coastline has plenty of beautiful stretches of sand, which constitute the ideal places to sunbathe all day long if you want. The more courageous can go for a pleasant walk along Agrigento's streets and narrow lanes.

    To think about

Whether you have decided to go and sunbathe on the beach or have opted for an excursion, do not forget to wear sunscreen lotion.
  • To avoid

Don't pay attention to the road signs; they are very often incorrect, especially on the trunk and secondary roads. It's better to ask the locals for directions. The people are generally very friendly and approachable: if you ask somebody for information, in a bar for example, don't be surprised if all those present help out with the answer.

    To try

Sicilian cuisine is excellent in all of the region's cities, from the appetisers to the desserts. Don't leave without having tried the "panelle", "arancini" and granita sandwiches. In Agrigento and its surroundings, you must not only taste the fish dishes but also the meat dishes and the vegetable "caponata" (similar to ratatouille).

    To bring back

Agrigento (as in the region of Caltagirone), the hand painted ceramic objects, might be a nice idea for a souvenir.
