The town of Cuneo was founded in 1198 on a hill of the same name by people from the surrounding areas seeking refuge from the harassment of their feudal masters. The town passed through various hands before finally ending up as part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and, under the Dukes of Savoy, it was developed to a considerable extent. In 1857, the area located in the current Maritime Alps National Park was declared a Royal Hunting Reserve and, as such, boasts a large and organised network of footpaths and mule-driving tracks that can be used for outings and walking trips. The 69,053 acres of parkland stretch over the southern part of Piedmont to the border with Liguria, over a stretch of land that starts at around 800m above sea level in the lowlands, but reaches 3,297m at the highest summit (Argentera). The little glacial lakes and the hot springs at the foot of Mount Matto contribute to the overall attraction of the area, which is home to deer, chamois, and marmots.
