Between Umbria and Marche, Mont Sibillini National Park protects the surrounding nature and its unique beauty. The lowest lying areas start at around 500m above sea level and are covered in pubescent oaks and hornbeams, while up on the higher reaches, beech trees give way to grassy pastureland. All of these elements help to create a timeless atmosphere. Gentle hills ring the basin of the Piano Grande near Castelluccio di Norcia. This vast and high karstic plateau is divided in two by a deep scar, the 'Fosso dei Mergani' ditch, which in the spring is awash with the many colours of poppies, cornflowers, and white lentils.
