The city is unreal and fabulous but accessible thanks to the numerous affordable hotels situated around Mestre which is at most 4 miles from the Grand Canal. Want to go shopping? Head to Milan where the clothes in the shop windows will be those worn by people elsewhere a year later. Cities are not the only thing on offer in northern Italy. Don't forget Tuscany and the Lombard Lakes to eat well and rest.
