In the historic centre of Rome, the capital of the Roman Empire, you'll find some of the most significant sites of the Antiquity, beginning with the Coliseum. In its day, the amphitheatre could hold up to 50,000 spectators for gladiator or animal fights. It was built in the 1st century BC and remains in excellent condition. Not far from there, you can go to the Foro Romano (Roman Forum) district, the centre of social life in ancient Rome. Slightly removed from the city centre, the Baths of Caracalla are precious evidence of Roman customs.
