For centuries, residents, travellers, and pilgrims have lived alongside the historical sites that make up this magnificent and luminous city. Located in a basin surrounded by seven hills, Rome is a succession of beautiful monuments that will leave you dumbfounded at every turn. In addition to being the former capital of the Roman Empire and the current capital of Italy, Rome is also home to the capital of Christianity: Vatican City. Furthermore, the city offers all sorts of itineraries that will take you through its many wonders. Perhaps the best way to discover it is to get lost and stroll through the streets and the most famous squares. There are numerous important sites contained over a small area: Rotonda Square with the Pantheon (a Roman temple with a marble pediment), Navona Square (a triumph of the Baroque style) with the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini, and Borromini's Church of Saint Agnès. When night falls, Spagna Square, with its famous flight of steps, livens up, while at Campo Square the local youth come to enjoy a drink and a chat around the statue of Giordano Bruno. If there's anything you are particularly wishing for, you should go to the Trevi Fountain and toss a coin into the water, as is the tradition. Surrounded by ancient buildings, this famous fountain attracts tourists from all over the world: a common feature is photographers trying to recreate the memorable scene of 'la Dolce Vita' when Anita Ekberg dives into the water. From Piazza del Popolo square, on which stand twin churches, you can go up to Villa Borghese, a park full of lush vegetation with a little lake and a gallery that was named after it. You can then continue on to Trastevere for a bite to eat and a grattachecca (shaved ice with fruit flavouring).
