Southern Sardinia, Sardinia

The southeast of Sardinia offers a relatively different landscape from the northern region of Olbia. Inland, the landscape is made up of a group of vast mountains, which are largely wooded, covered with scrubland or cultivated. To the east of Cagliari, the regional county town, you will find a beautiful coastal road leading towards Villasimius,( a former village of shepherds and fishermen) which experienced major development in tourism in the 1960s. The sandy beaches are not only beautiful, but their size is impressive in (Costa Rei) compared to those that we are used to seeing in other Mediterranean countries. Villasimius is a true 'paradise resort', even more beautiful than the hinterland which is itself not lacking in charm ... To the south of Cagliari, in the region of Pula, you will find a beautiful coastline lined with coastal pines. This large agricultural and tourist village is easily accessible from Cagliari thanks to an expressway and you will find a large choice of hotels here for all kinds of holidays and all kinds of budget.

Visit Southern Sardinia

  • To see

A traditional Sardinian celebration is worth seeing. The most well-known is that of Sant'Efisio which runs from 1 to 4 May. This involves fanfares, processions and rejoicing in the streets leading from the historic centre of Cagliari to Nora beach. In contrast to this and on a more poetic note, there is also Notte dei Poeti (Night of the Proms), which takes place every summer from mid-July to mid-August at the Roman theatre of Nora where operas, concerts and theatrical performances are scheduled.

    To do

An excursion in La Barbagia, the Sardinian hinterland, where the sight and scent of green oak, cork oak, rosemary and various Mediterranean plants offers you an instantaneous change of scenery. Along the roads, which are often free of traffic, you will discover a traditional village perched on a hilltop where goats pass from one enclosure to another, as well as an agritourismo, a farm-hostel which serves very good food.

    To think about

Sardinia remains a seasonal destination; many of the hotels are only open from the beginning of May until the end of September. If there is an auto-tour outside of this period, find out about the possibility of staying outside of the towns. Take into account that this is labeled a "jet set" destination and so the prices are high in the seaside resorts.
  • To avoid

Avoid Cagliari by car. It is difficult to park and it is hard to find your way in the streets, which are often one-way and obstructed by vehicles. You could also easily ignore the 'Nuraghique towers' as these round constructions, which are made from rock, are hardly spectacular and hardly anything is known about their use at the time of their construction around 1500 B.C.

    To try

Porceddu is the Sardinian specialty par excellence. These suckling pigs roasted on a spit are more than just famous and you will be able to try them in the rustic setting of a farm-hostel: it doesn't get much better than that! In addition to this, don't miss out on trying the gnocchi with sausage and the spaghetti with mule eggs and if you're out dining, order a meal of several small starters (antipasti), such as meats, marinated vegetables squid, etc.

    To bring back

You could bring back the honey from a strawberry tree, despite its bitter taste. Or else a bottle of wine: a bottle of cannonau (a robust vintage red wine) is the most widely spread variety, together with a myrtle spirit (for connoisseurs). As for its craftwork, the island is famous for its tapestries made by hand on wooden looms, from wool, cotton or flax. Flick knives are also sold, which are decorative objects made from ceramic or wicker.
