The Costa Smeralda is the most renowned coast in Sardinia. It begins in the north of Olbia and runs right up to Palau, opposite the Maddalena Archipelago. Baia Sardinia, Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo are among the largest resorts: they lie along magnificent creeks that make them a seaside paradise, although they have no original character per se. Opt rather for the Maddalena and Caprera islands which are accessible by ferry from Palau (a 30 minute journey). The town of Maddalena is very pretty and quaint with its coloured buildings and lively seafront, whereas Caprera remains a nature reserve and the place to go to discover untouched creeks and enjoy an absolutely splendid setting.
