The southern coast of Sicily, Sicily

Bordered with long beaches and dotted with traditional villages, the south coast is a great place to relax. Scattered amongst the dunes with pleasant gardens behind them, the hotels offer a clear view of the blue waves of the Mediterranean. Of a good size, these hotels offer a variety of leisure activities to entertain you during your stay, though it would be a shame to just stick to this. Along the southern coast lies the ancient city of Agrigento known for its very beautiful Valley of Temples. The small town of Sciacca is also worth a tour for its typical Sicilian atmosphere that should be discovered in the morning, at market time, to overwhelm your senses with all of the scents and the colours.

pros

  •  The archaeological heritage.
  •  The long sandy beaches.

cons

  •  The landscape is quite monotonous.

Visit The southern coast of Sicily

  • To see

Bordered with long beaches and dotted with traditional villages, the south coast is a great place to relax. Along the southern coast lies the ancient city of Agrigento known for its very beautiful Valley of Temples. The small town of Sciacca is also worth a tour for its typical Sicilian atmosphere.

    To do

At the foot of the modern city of Agrigento, the ancient city extends its golden stones in bucolic scenery of wild grasses and shrubs in dense foliage. Some 12 miles north of Agrigento, the fishing port of Sciacca has retained its highly endearing, traditional look. The centre of town, are pressed up one against the other, perfectly epitomises the timeless Sicilian soul.

    To think about

Remember to cover your shoulders and legs in churches, and, on the beach, avoid going topless!
  • To avoid

Avoid making inappropriate comments concerning religion, as the Sicilians are dedicated believers. Do not talk about the Mafia, it is still a sensitive subject, along with the vendetta.

    To try

The Sicilian cuisine is excellent. Pizza and pasta are understandably very widespread, but you will find numerous other dishes. Antipasti (meats, cheeses, small fried fish), i primi (rice and gnocchi or minestre), i secondi (meat or fish), i contorni (potatoes, salads) and finally, i dolci (pastries made of almonds, candied fruit, ice cream).

    To bring back

Sicilian crafts are quite varied. You can bring back some ceramic, papyrus or even 'pupi', Sicilian puppets. As for flavours, it is possible to buy capers, olive oil, real pasta and fruit in an almond pastry.
