  • The lush vegetation of Jamaica

Like other Caribbean islands, Jamaica benefits from a very lush vegetation. Over 3,000 plant species grow on the island, including over 200 orchid species and carnivorous plants. Hundreds of ferns, countless species of palms, mangroves, hibiscus, including the Blue Mahoe, and the bunches of bougainvillea give the island the exuberance of a lost paradise. Numerous hardwood species, like ebony, campeche wood, mahogany, and baobab are used to produce handicraft (sculptures). Pepper and ginger grow on the island, as well as coffee, cocoa and an incredible number of fruits, including pineapples, bananas and ackee, the local fruit. Jamaica is also home to several species of cactus at Hellshire Hills and around Treasure Beach.
