Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Ocho Rios or Ochie, as it is nicknamed, is a city full of history, abandoned by settlers, invaded by pirates who plagued Spanish galleons on their voyages between Cuba and South America. Known for the most beautiful waterfalls in the country, the Y's Falls, Ocho Rios has been for us who are amazed by Jamaica, the starting point for Port Antonio, located within two hours of drive, the most wild and most beautiful of Jamaica ! But it is also the region that hosts the famous Bob Marley Museum (better than the one in Kingston) in the village of Nine Miles. A Jamaican guide will tell you the life of the singer and explain the essence of his songs, whose choruses he even sings: you will visit the childhood bedroom of Bob Marley, see the stone on which he put his head while singing, smoking and reading the Bible. A visit to remember ! The hotels in the region of Ocho Rios are varied, topped by the home of Ian Fleming, Goldeneye, dedicated to coin holders obviously well supplied. The Jamaica Inn combines the sophistication and the comfort of a beautiful beach and a very warm atmosphere. Built on the hillside, the Sans Souci, dedicated to nude and dressed ones, will conquer you with a magnificent view onto the lagoon. Also in the same style, the Hedonism III, will offer festivities and human warmth. The Superclubs Breezes Runaway Bay is a club placed in a beautiful park properly maintained that is suitable for families.

Visit Ocho Rios

  • To see

You will discover the city, walk into the shops, have a drink in bars, including the famous Mama Marley's, the restaurant-bar and grill of Bob Marley's mother, very nice and finely decorated. And visit the famous Bob Marley Museum in the village of Nine Miles.

    To do

Scuba diving, sports, riding, golf, fishing, cruises and boat rides will delight you ... and the famous Y's Falls !!!

    To think about

Jamaicans are very nice despite their reputation of being aggressive. Do not worry, they will be the first to give you directions... And you'll need it because signs are very misleading !!! (The roads are not as dangerous as it is claimed, these are roads in the countryside.) Get a detailed map of Jamaica upon arrival at the hotel (some have maps) or from your tour operator or at the reception. And if possible, take a guide: in this way you will be sure to visit the island in peace.
  • To avoid

Don't think that by going to Jamaica, you can buy and smoke cannabis in peace. You would be wrong ! The country is very strict about that and it is forbidden to smoke or possess cannabis. The police won't forgive it, and especially to tourists ! Policemen will make you spend several hours or even days in prison! So, beware! ... Even if it is sold freely at the Bob Marley Museum ! Avoid parking just anywhere, pay close attention to signs. If you have parked in a wrong place, sheriffs will give you a fine and put a shoe on your tire until you pay. You cannot negotiate ... They are intransigent !

    To try

Exotic fruits such as pineapple, banana, papaya, coconut ... but also vegetables such as ackee, the national vegetable, fruit of the akesia; breadfruit, the fruit of the breadfruit; spices ... The specialities will satisfy you, like jerk pork or chicken, often served with fries. Some other national gourmet dishes : the pepperpot (an arawakdish, a meat stew cooked with collaloo, a local species of spinach sprinkled with pepper and grated coconut), escovitched fish (fresh fish cooked in sauce with onions, vinegar, red pepper ....), gizzadas (small coconut pies with ginger) ... It would be a shame not to try the famous coffee of the Blue Mountains, known as the best coffee in the world !

    To bring back

A country of Rastas and the mythical place of reggae, marked by music and the memory of the unforgettable Bob Marley, Jamaica will give you what you expect. You will find the atmosphere and the warmth you dream of, from colourful homes to music, and the famous "yo man, no problem" ... Apart from your memories, you can bring home CDs, T-shirts with Bob Marley printed on them, and rasta hats ... Do not forget the coffee of the Blue Mountains.

    Jamaica Restaurant Week, 11th-19th November

Many of us head to Jamaica on package holidays at large resort complexes where most, if not all, our meals are included in the price of the accommodation. This being the case, we rarely get the opportunity to sample the real flavours of the island at its numerous restaurants. Well this week and next is the perfect opportunity to put that right with the seventh annual Jamaica Restaurant Week. Similar
