The seasons are the same as in Europe. In winter, Japan receives the dry and cold North winds that touch the Japanese Sea to trigger off rains and snow. In summer, there are two rainy seasons, the first in mid-June (Tsuyu) and that can witness severe downpours, and the second in September. Annual average temperatures vary significantly: 5°C, at Nemuro (Hokkaido) and 16°C, at Okinawa. There are risks of typhoons from August to October. The north part of the peninsula witnesses short summers and long, harsh winters with heavy snowfall. The best periods to visit the country are spring and autumn.
