Tokyo, the capital is the largest town in the country, and a vast conurbation spanning over 370 miles. It is also one of the most populous towns in the world with 50 million inhabitants, including the suburbs. The town has been destroyed twice, following the 1923 earthquake and after the Second World War. Do not fail to visit Ginza, the largest business district where you can shop for everything. The imperial Palace destroyed in 1945 and reconstructed the old-fashioned way is surrounded by deep moats. This is the residence of the emperor. It is only open to the public twice a year, on 2nd January and on the emperor's birthday. The Tokyo national museum houses the largest collection of Japanese art in the world. Asakusa, to the north east of the centre, is one of the rare neighbourhoods where you can relive the atmosphere of the past. Shinjuku, lying on the west is the hot spot in Tokyo: luxury boutiques, administrative buildings, bars, clubs and restaurants offering traditional Japanese cuisine.
