Jordan preserved several Byzantine mosaics, made in the 6th century by local artists who founded an art movement. One of these famous relics is the Palestinian map in the Saint-George of Madaba church; this document is unique for its geographical precision (150 sites cited) and Christian symbolism. Also, do not miss the unparalleled mosaic of Umm er Rasa representing cities in the eastern Christian world; mosaics of Mount Nebo church, notably that of the diaconicon baptistry, a true lesson of early Christian iconography; a mosaic of Khirbet el Mukhayyat (perhaps from Ancient Nebo) representing pastoral scenes and tame animals; and Jerash, the marvelous mosaic pavement of the Saint-Cosmos-and-Saint-Damian church.
