A Greco-Roman city of the Decapolis, the ancient Gadara (now called Umm Qais), in the valley of the Jordan River has kept vestiges of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras. It offers an incredible panorama of Lake Tiberias and the steep-sided Yarmouk valley dominated by the Golan Heights. The shopping street that has been exquisitely refurbished is one of the best parts of the site. Equally, make an effort to see the basilica with its spectacular terrace used as an atrium, the hot baths, the underground mausoleum, the acropolis and the Ottoman village that houses the museum and the necropolis.
