Mountains and valleys

Mountains and valleys A canyon in the Wadi Rum desert This type of rock formation can be observed right across the desert. It is also in this desert that Lawrence of Arabia is said to have taken refuge. Ralph Braumer / age fotostock;

Jordan offers the majestic descent into the valley of Wadi Mujib, Jordan's "Grand Canyon", and of Wadi el Hasa, where the Israelites settled after 38 years spent wandering. 35 miles south of Petra is the village of Ras en Naqab, 3,935 ft above sea level, offering spellbinding views of this desolate land of rocks and sand. In the horizon are the mountains of Wadi Rum and the turbulent crests of the Esh Sharat heights.
