On the road to Petra, make a stopover at Shobak castle, equally known as Krak de Montreal. Built by the Crusaders in 1115 on the crest of a hill, this castle was the first fortress of Transjordan. The warden will take you through a guided tour of the ruins, which seems to blend seamlessly into its geological surroundings. A 365-step stone staircase leads you to the castle water tank that enabled the knights to resist Saladin for 18 months.
