Airports

Queen Alia airport is 25 miles south of Amman. There is a bus serving Amman (it drops you at Abdali Station, King Hussein Street, Abdali, 1 mile from the town-centre) for about £1.50, luggage included. A taxi to the centre of Amman will cost £5 at most .

Requirements

You need a passport that is valid for at least six months after the departure date from Jordan and a tourist visa that can be issued upon arrival in Jordan (at the airport or at a frontier post if you are coming by road). Allow the embassy three days for the visa delivery. You need to bring your passport, and an ID photo. This visa is valid for fifteen days starting from the day you enter Jordan.

The Jordanian Dinar (JOD), which is made up of Piastres or Fils. £1 Sterling = approximately 1.05 JOD. It is best to bring Dollars with you, as the exchange rate you'll get once you're here is better than the rate you'll get with Pounds. Credit cards (American Express and Visa) are accepted in larger hotels and certain shops, and can also be used to withdraw cash from most of the banks in Amman and Aqaba. You will find ATM machines in Amman, Wadi Musa (Petra) and Aqaba. Avoid using travellers cheques, as they are not always accepted and the commission fee is fairly high. Banks are open from Sunday to Thursday, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, and some are also open on Saturdays.

Local transportation

There are international and Jordanian car rentals at the airport, in Ammam and Aqada. A day will cost you about £30 with unlimited mileage. You will need your national driving licence and international insurance green card. You can also rent a chauffeur-driven car.

The country's major cities are served by fast, relatively inexpensive coaches. A round ticket from Amman to Aqada costs about £8 for 205 miles), £11 for Amman-Petra.

Taxis hired in the city (yellow) have a timer (50p an average journey in Amman). There are service-taxis (white) covering long distances with fixed itineraries that leave when they are full. You can be dropped where you want, and picked up along the way.
Amman and Aqaba are served daily by Royal Jordanian Airlines.

No vaccine is required. Simply avoid drinking tap water outside of big cities, and if you are going in the desert, bring tablets to purify the water in your flask. If you have a fragile liver or stomach, do not eat vegetables (especially in summer) or ice creams.

Tips, known as 'bakchich' is an eastern custom, and is actually a vital salary supplement for the local people. Allow 10% of your bill's total for hotel and restaurant staff and 12 JOD (£12) per day for your personal driver or guide. For taxi drivers, round up the amount to the hundred of fils.
Upon arrival in Jordan, you will have to pay a tax of about £6-8. If you are travelling individually, you will have to pay an exit tax.
