Umm el-Jimal is a city that used to be frequented by the caravans (lying 32 miles north east of Jerash), founded by the Nabataeans around the 1st century BC that lies along the ancient spice road, on the Hauran volcanic plateau. The black basalt constructions cast a strange and gloomy atmosphere on the ghost town. The fifteen churches built on the site show the importance of the city in the Byzantine era, which was part of the Ghassanid kingdom, an Arab tribe converted to Christianity. See the barracks and their well-kept tower, the praetorium, the Claudianos and Julianos churches, the East church, the double church and the Numerianos church.
