In Almaty, the country's former capital, walk along the long and large avenues, sometimes appointed with vast green spaces. In the town-centre, stroll in the pedestrian malls and shopping streets of Zhibek Zholy to see its Tsoum or Zanghar, a big shop. Don't miss another big covered market, further in. Further southwards, go to Panfilov park and visit the Russian cathedral of Zenkov of the beginning of the century, one of the greatest wooden nail-less achievement in the world. On Sunday, watch the parade of young married couples, their families and friends, immortalising this moment close to the impressive memorial of the Second World War and its everlasting flame. Relax in Arassan bath houses opposite the park: Russian, Turkish or Finnish. At the far east of Gogol avenue is the Gorki park, another relaxation site for the family. A few miles west of the town, visit the big container-bazaar of Barakholka and its numerous chinese-made products.
