For thousands of years, Central Asia has not formed a homogenous political set-up. Populations are displaced by climate or conflicts.
Ist millenium BC. There are nomadic tribes in the north of Kazakhstan and stable tribes in the south. During this time, the movements of populations were motivated by soil fertility.
1245. Introduction of the term "kazak" meaning vagabond, free man and determined your belonging to an ethnic group. Here passed the silk route (the name was only given in the 19th century), network of passable roads from the Indies to Europe.
From the 9th century. Kazaks become Muslims.
13th century. Mongolian invasion led by Genigis Khan.
From the 15 to the 17th century. Chased by the Kalmuks (western Buddhist Mongolians), who were later chased by eastern Mongolians.
18th century. Demanding aid to Russia to push back the various invasions.
1731. The majority of the tribes' chiefs voted in favour of a Russian identity.
1820 to 1850. Russian colonisation led to revolts and settlement. Conflicts became violent and hunder settled.
1917. Kazak nationalists proclaimed independence and clashed with communism.
1920. Kazakhstan became the Kazakh Socialist Republic, an autonomous republic.
1936. Federated republic in the USSR. During theSecond World War, Russia used the territory to implant its factories.
1954. Kruchtchev instituted an agricultural production adjustment policy, which led to the migration of several volunteers in the country.
16 December 1991. Independence of the Kazak state.
Today.Migration has changed hands. Russians, Germans, Jews, and Kazaks from China and Mongolia come to settle in Kazakhstan, the land of their ancestors. 53% Kazaks are in the territory, having 14 provinces. Nursultan A. NAZARBAYEV is Head of State since 1991 and Daniyal AKHMETOV is Prime Minister since 2003.
