600 BC: Nacheo, the last Egyptian Pharoah sends a marine expedition to the Kenyan coast
1498: Vasco da Gama stopps at Malindi after several unfruitful attempts on the south shore (where the Arab tribes, who settled long ago, chased him away)
1720: Arabs chase away the Portuguese from Kenya after the siege of Fort Jesus in Mombasa
1824: British protectorate
1922: The first scrambles for independence. Among the Kikuyu, there was Johnston Kamau who, as Jomo Kenyatta, soon became the main artisan of independence
1952: Kenyatta is sentenced to seven year imprisonment. Mau Mau revolt
1963: Kenya becomes an independent republic and member of the Commonwealth
1978: Death of Kenyatta. The Vice-President Arap Moi takes over
1992: The first free elections (700 dead), inter-ethnic conflicts in the Rift Valley (2,000 dead).
1997: Arap Moi is re-elected
2002: Election of President Mwai Kibaki
