Located on the northern shore almost 200 miles north of Mombasa, the Lamu Archipelago perfectly illustrates the ancient Arabian and Islamic influence on Sub-Saharan Africa. Today, Lamu receives numerous tourists who are attracted by Lamu's enchanting and picturesque setting. The town - seen by many as the cradle of Swahili culture - is dotted with 29 mosques, the oldest being the Pwani Mosque which was built in 1370.
