 Historical dates

15th century, Kyrgyz settled in the region.
1876, the territory was attached to the Russian empire.
1990, organisation of free elections and Askar Akaiev took over power as President.
31 August 1991, the country voted for its independence.
2004, Asher Askaïev was still in power. He is seen as one of the most liberal leaders in Central Asia.
25 March 2005, the Tulip revolution: a big opposition movement against the government, led mainly by former dignitaries of the regime and supported by the United States, that took large crowds to the presidential Palace. Looting and anger caused Askaïev and Kourmanbek Bakiev, the acting head of government appointed by parliament, to flee. Askaïev took advantage of his position to own all the resources and companies of the country, leaving a large majority of people miserable.
