The Temple of Luang Prabang The ancient city of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site Martin Siepmann/ age fotostock
Perched in the mountains north of Laos, Luang Prabang, the capital of the first 1353 kingdom, is between the Mekong and Nam Khan river. Influenced by Khmers, its 66 temples' architecture is so rich that it was made a Unesco world heritage site in 1995. Visit the ancient royal palace that is today a museum. And do not miss out on the temples. Vat Mai Suvannaphumaham and its gold-pattern decorated front, Wat Xieng Thong, is one of the oldest and better restored, with its mosaic sun-illuminated tree of life. You'll also find Mount Phusi jutting out over the town and peaking at 330 feet. An 80-foot tall stupa (Buddhist bell-like relic) offers you a view of the town under an umbrella of palm trees.
