Pakse is the capital of the ancient Champassak kingdom, south of Laos. There are a few beautiful colonial elevations like those of the Chinese society, and a market filled with stalls of cotton and silk. Between the 10th and 13th centuries, the Angkor empire owned the region. Thus, the pre-Angkorian ruins of the Khmer site in Vat Phu is associated with Cambodian myth. Erected some sixteen miles away from the small town of Campassak, over three storeys, the Vat Phu site is dotted with palaces, temples and Khmer statues of angelic purity.
